:-The BJP Government is portraying India’s democratic framework as weakened, Through its own functioning:-Kumari Selja

Chandigarh / 5th, December.( Sanjay Rai): The General Secretary of All India Congress Committee, former Union Minister and Member of Parliament from Sirsa, Kumari Selja, has said that India has a proud democratic tradition wherein foreign dignitaries visiting the country formally meet the Leaders of Opposition in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. This practice is not a mere formality, but a symbol of India’s strong, balanced and participatory democracy. Ignoring this tradition and excluding the Leaders of Opposition from such meetings is detrimental to democratic values.

In a statement released to the media, Kumari Selja said that whether it was former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh or Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee, all respected this tradition and acknowledged the importance of the Opposition. The dignity of Parliament has always been strengthened by this inclusive approach. Unfortunately, the present BJP government has sidelined this crucial democratic practice. Excluding Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, and Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, from meetings held with foreign representatives is not only a violation of parliamentary decorum, but also appears to be an attempt to weaken the constitutional role of the Opposition. Kumari Selja asserted that democracy functions through respect and participation from both the government and the Opposition. The BJP government’s disregard for established traditions is harmful to India’s democratic institutions as well as the nation’s international credibility. She urged the central government to respect democratic conventions, restore parliamentary propriety, and ensure that the Opposition is given the due constitutional space to fulfil its responsibilities.

:- Kumari Selja raises issue of severe drinking water shortage in Sirsa in Lok Sabha.

Kumari Selja raised the issue of drinking water scarcity in the Lok Sabha, stating that several villages across Sirsa and many parts of Haryana still lack access to even basic drinking water facilities. Despite the BJP being in power at both the Centre and the State, the situation remains unchanged. The government makes big announcements but nothing is visible on the ground. Kumari Selja said that in the Rania region of Sirsa district, more than 40 villages have no access to canal water, while in the border areas of Ellenabad, people are still forced to purchase water for drinking. Kumari Selja urged the government to immediately prioritise the drinking water crisis in Haryana and Sirsa and take concrete steps to resolve it.
